Boundaries and permeability (2016/2017) booklet (photo series and text) - 21 x 21 cm
The photo series Boundaries and Permeability consists of several images of partially framed body parts, close-ups, and portraits that reveal various sun- and clothing-induced marks on the skin. The skin’s sensitivity to light - and the physical changes that follow - turns the human body, much like light-sensitive photographic paper, into a surface of inscriptions. In some of the photographs, not only tan lines and variations of skin tone are visible, but also physical imprints left by underwear or bras - the clothing is absent from the image, yet clearly legible.
In the summer of 2016, I was able to photograph twenty-two participants for this work. Some did not wish to be identifiable in the images, which is why their faces are partially hidden or cropped, others had no issue appearing nude, while yet others chose to cover their chest and/or pelvic area during the shoot.
